How Does Divorce Mediation Work?
Answer
Divorce mediation works when a mediator helps divorcing parties work together to reach agreements that define the terms of the divorce, This includes:
- How to divide marital property (assets and debts).
- Custody and decision-making for minor-age children.
- Parenting plans and time sharing for positive co-parenting.
- Child support (the financial support provided by the parents for their children).
- Spousal support (how much and for how long a spouse may pay or receive alimony).
- Any other issues that are important to the parties—including new relationships, pets, communication, future expenses, and others.
In divorce mediation, the mediator may meet together or separately with the parties. The parties are always in control and make all the decisions with the help of the mediator who manages the process. Divorcing couples who have difficulty communicating can still find success in mediation as mediators use different strategies and techniques to help the parties work together toward agreement.
