Frequently Asked Questions About Divorce Mediation

Here are some common questions. If you have your own question, please send us an email.

With Divorce Mediation, we help you and your spouse develop your own agreements for your future. These include but are not limited to:

  • How to divide your marital property (assets and debts)
  • Custody and decision-making for children
  • Parenting plans and time sharing for positive co-parenting
  • Child support (the financial support each of you will provide your children)
  • Spousal support (how much and for how long you may pay or receive alimony)
  • Please include any other issues regarding your family’s future that are important to you—including new relationships, pets, communication, future expenses, and others!

Mediators don’t give legal advice. Parties are encouraged to consult with an attorney if there is a question regarding legal rights. However, there is no law in Oklahoma requiring you to get an attorney at any point during your divorce – and divorcing without attorneys significantly reduces the cost of divorce.

Once agreements have been reached, we can assist you in completing the process by preparing court documents and providing assistance for self filing. Once approved by the court, the agreements made in mediation will become binding and your divorce will be complete.

Divorce mediation with children and minimal property generally takes two to three sessions, depending on the complexity of the issues and the parties’ willingness to negotiate. Divorce mediation is a flexible process, and the parties make the decision regarding how many sessions are needed to adequately address the important issues regarding the future of their family and finances.

Divorce mediation currently takes place through online video conferencing using Zoom. With online-video mediation – you can meet together without having to be together. All that is needed is a computer/iPad/smartphone with audio & camera, WIFI, and a space free from interruptions.

The average cost of divorce with children in Oklahoma is $18,700, often starting off with $3,000-$5,000 retainers for each party. With Keiter Mediation, the fee for divorce mediation services is $3,000.00.

This includes two 2-hour mediation sessions as well as drafting the Memorandum of Understanding for the parties to review and sign. The Memorandum of Understanding describes the agreements reached in mediation. This fee also includes the preparation of all court documents along with an appointment to go over the steps for self-filing.

Most choose to split the cost of divorce mediation. However, it’s up to you and your spouse to decide who pays for divorce mediation. Mediation costs and payment arrangements are discussed at the mediation consultation.
