How do I become a mediator?
Answer
Each state has its own requirements and certifications needed in order to become a certified mediator.
In general, to become a mediator, you typically need to follow these steps:
- Education: While most states require no degree to become a mediator, a background in law, psychology, or conflict resolution can be beneficial. The mediator’s educational background along with their vocational background and life experience can be of benefit as they develop the needed skills to mediate effectively.
- Training: Attend a mediation training program that meets the standards set by professional mediation organizations or state requirements. These programs can range from 24 to 40 hours or more.
- Certification: Some states or professional organizations require certification or the fulfillment of other requirements. This may involve completing specific training hours, observing mediations, and conducting mediations.
- Experience: Gain experience by observing experienced mediators, volunteering in mediation programs, or working in mediation clinics.
- Continuing Education: Stay current with continuous learning and professional development to maintain and improve your mediation skills.
To become a court-approved civil and commercial mediator in Oklahoma, you must attend a 24-hour course approved by the MCLE Committee of the Oklahoma Bar Association. To become a court-approved divorce and family mediator in Oklahoma, you must attend a 40-hour course approved by the MCLE Committee of the Oklahoma Bar Association. After completing the training, you will need to observe or conduct several mediations before qualifying and promoting yourself as a court-approved mediator. Youโll also need to keep up to date on your training through continuous learning with a minimum of 6 hours every other year. Other states have their own requirements.
