What Makes for a Successful Career in Mediation?
Answer
A career in mediation can be very rewarding. Courts across the country are recognizing the benefits of using mediation to resolve disputes including divorce, custody, family, civil/commercial, and other.
Here are five qualities new mediators should consider essential to becoming a successful mediator:
- Passion: Having a desire to help people work together to resolve conflict so they can move forward in their lives.
- Preparation: Getting training in mediation including basic mediation training along with ongoing continuing ed to build on a solid mediation training foundation.
- Practice: Nothing will take the place of practice in mediating disputes. You will never be too new to start or too old to keep learning by constant practice. Mediation is both a science and an art, and practice puts the two together. Along with practice, learning from (and networking with) more experienced mediators will aid in the learning process.
- Promotion and Marketing: Successful mediators learn how to market themselves as professional mediators. Learning how to market yourself as a mediator will be essential to growing your mediation practice whether or not you are on a roster of mediators.
- Persistence: The mediation journey takes time. Commitment to continued learning and practice are key to the mediator’s development and growth. Mediators develop themselves and their practices in many different ways. Persistence will be a necessary component to any business plan.
